2 1. Si + présent+présent General truths Cause and effect
« If this happens (or doesn’t happen), then this happens (or doesn’t happen)» Si tu me touches, je te gifles Si on parle anglais, le prof se fâche. Si ont dit « tu » au prof, il flippe.

Si + present + futur Can be the same truth mentioned in the first si clause (si + présent + présent), but is now more specific to the moment, more immediate. « If this happens (or doesn’t), then this will happen (or won’t) Si tu me touches, je te giflerai. Si on parle anglais, le prof se fâchera. Si on dit « tu » au prof, il flippe.

5 3. Si + imparfait + conditionnel
Hypothetical future (possible) Can be the same truths as in the previously mentioned si clauses, but stated more hypothetically. « If this were to happen (or not), then this would happen (or wouldn’t) » Si tu me touchais, je te giflerais. Si on parlais anglais, le prof se fâcherait. Si on disais « tu » au prof, il flipperait.

6 4. Si + plus-que-parfait + conditionnel passé
Hypothetical past (impossible) If this had happened, then that would have happened Si tu m’avais touché, je t’aurais giflé. Si on avait parlé anglais, le prof se serait fâché. Si on avait dit « tu » au prof, il aurait flippé.

7 5. Si + plus-que-parfait + conditionnel
Past event that is affecting a current situation. If that had (or hadn’t happened), this would be (or wouldn’t be) the situation. Si tu m’avais touché, je te giflerais. Si on avait parlé anglais, le prof se fâcherait. Si on avait dit « tu » au prof, il flipperait.

8 Si clauses 4 and 5 You can either say : Si tu n'avais pas bu trop de bière (la nuit dernière) tu ne vomirais pas comme ça (ce matin, au moment où je te parle)  or Si tu n'avais pas bu trop de bière (la nuit dernière), tu n'aurais pas vomi comme ça (la nuit dernière) You can also say Si tu ne buvais pas trop de bière (en général, c'est ton habitude), tu ne vomirais pas comme ça (maintenant, au moment où je te parle, mais également en général)

9 Exemple Si je ne t'avais connue, si je ne t'avais pas aimée Je n'aurais aucune idée du prix qu'avait la vie Si je n'avais l'amour que tu m'apportes chaque jour Je serais aveugle et sourd, je n'aurais rien compris
