1 LE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ (The Perfect Tense) GET IT “PERFECT” FOR LEVEL 2
This is aimed ay Year 8, to introduce the Perfect tense, first with AVOIR verbs

2 QU’EST-CE QUE C’EST ? It’s a SPECIAL FORM of the VERB.
It allows you to talk about what has HAPPENED in the PAST.

3 FORMATION TWO You need… BUILDING BLOCKS
The idea is to stress, imprint early in students’ mind that you need 2 components to build the perfect tense as too often they remember the verb with different ending but quickly forget the part of avoir or etre.

4 Verb in Past Participle Conjugated Form AVOIR Usually…
You may want to ask students if they remember what form AVOIR takes with JE, TU etc… before putting the next slide. Usually…

5 Consider the following:
Some examples: 1 J’ai mangé une pomme. 2 Tu as vendu tes CDs! 3 Ils ont fini leurs devoirs. Can you guess what the above sentences mean? 1 I ate an apple. 2 You sold your CDs! 3 They finished their homework.

6 THE TWO THINGS ARE…. 1. The correct conjugated form of avoir
2. The action in the past (the past participle)

7 AVOIR Can you remember the parts of avoir? J’ai I have
Tu as You have (singular) Il/Elle/On a He/she/one has Nous avons We have Vous avez You have (plural) Ils/Elles ont They have

8 THE PAST PARTICIPLE Can you see a pattern? Manger Mangé Danser Dansé

9 THE PAST PARTICIPLE Were you right?
With ER verbs (e.g. Manger/Danser), take off the ER and add É to form the past participle. With RE verbs (e.g. Vendre/Perdre), take off the RE and add U to form the past participle. With IR verbs (e.g. Finir/Servir), take off the IR and add I to form the past participle.

10 NOW FOR PRACTICE The key things to remember:
You need to know the verb “avoir” (to have). You need to know the past participle of the verb. These rules apply to 95% of all verbs in French! You will learn later how the other 5% work! Now for some practice!

11 NOW FOR PRACTICE Il joue au tennis. Elle regarde par la fenêtre.
Elle vend des légumes au marché. Nous finissons nos devoirs. Il obéit à son père. Je compare les deux livres. Elle plonge dans la piscine. Le professeur attend de bons résultats. Le professeur rend les devoirs en classe. J’entends l’alarme.

12 NOW FOR PRACTICE Il a joué au tennis. Elle a regardé par la fenêtre.
Elle a vendu des légumes au marché. Nous avons fini nos devoirs. Il a obéi à son père. J’ai comparé les deux livres. Elle a plongé dans la piscine. Le professeur a attendu de bons résultats. Le professeur a rendu les devoirs en classe. J’ai entendu l’alarme.
