2 L’impératif (The imperative) is used to give commands, directions and suggestions. The imperative exists in only three forms: tu, nous and vous.

3 Form the tu command form of –er verbs by dropping the final –s from the present tense form. Déjeune avec nous. (Eat lunch with us.) Ne me pose pas de questions! (Don’t ask me any questions.)

4 The tu command forms for –ir and –re verbs use the regular tu present-tense forms and end in –s. Finis tes devoirs. (Finish your homework.) Réponds à la question. (Answer the question.)

5 Vous forms use the regular present-tense forms. Prêtez-moi votre livre. (Lend me your book.) Ne nous téléphonez pas après dix heures. (Don’t call us after 10 o’clock.)

6 Nous forms use regular present-tense forms. Jouons aux cartes! (Let’s play cards!) N’allons pas à l’école. (Let’s not go to school.)

7 AVOIR and ÊTRE have irregular command forms. avoir être (tu) aiesois (nous) ayonssoyons (vous)ayezsoyez

8 In affirmative commands, place object pronouns after the verb. Link the pronouns to the verb with a hyphen. Me and te become moi and toi in affirmative commands. Donne-moi ton adresse e-mail. (Give me your e-mail address.) Faites-le! (Do it!)

9 In negative commands, place object pronouns before the verb. Ne me donne pas ton numéro de téléphone. (Don’t give me your phone number.) Ne le faites pas! (Don’t do it!)
