2 The Past Infinitive The French infinitif passé (past infinitive) is used to say: How someone feels about something they have done in the past. Ex: Je suis contente d’avoir mangé avec toi. I am happy to have eaten (I ate) with you.

3 The Past Infinitive When someone does something after having done something else (uses après) Ex: Après avoir mangé, il a vomi. After having eaten, he threw up.

4 Formation It is formed much like the passé composé, except that one does not conjugate the auxiliary verb (helping verb). The formation is as follows: Infinitive auxiliary verb + past participle Avoir + Past Participle Etre + Past Participle Reflexive Pronoun + Etre + Past Participle

5 Examples: Je veux avoir terminé mes tâches ménagères avant midi.
Past Participle Examples: Avoir Je veux avoir terminé mes tâches ménagères avant midi. I want to have finished my chores before noon. Après avoir fait mes devoirs, je suis sortie. After having finished my homework, I went out. Nous sommes contents de nous être levés à l’heure. We are happy to have gotten (ourselves) up on time. Etre Past Participle Reflexive Pronoun

6 Notes When using the past infinitive where the auxiliary verb is être, you still need to follow the rules of past participle agreement: Après être allés au ciné, nous sommes allés au café. After having gone to the movies, we went to the café. Elle a déchiré son pantalon après être tombée. She ripped her pants after having fallen.

7 Notes Pronomial verbs, such as the reflexive and reciprocal verbs you’ve worked with, still need their reflexive/reciprocal pronoun: Après vous vous être lavés, vous pouvez manger le petit déjeuner. After you've washed up, you can eat breakfast. Après m’être habillée, je suis allée au centre commercial. After having gotten dressed, I went to the shopping center.

8 Uses of the Past Infinitive with vocabulary
When apologizing: Je m’excuse d’avoir été en retard. I’m sorry for having been late. Je suis vraiment désolé(e) d’avoir oublié de te téléphoner. I’m really sorry for having forgotten to phone you. Pardonne-moi de ne pas avoir répondu. Pardon me for not having responded. Je m’en veux d’avoir dit ça. I feel bad for having said that.

9 Other uses of the Past Infinitive
When expressing gratitude: Je vous remercie de m'avoir aidé. I thank you for helping me. Merci de m’avoir présenté Johnny Depp. Thank you for introducing Johnny Depp to me.

10 Negation of the Past Infinitive
Because avoir/etre is not conjugated, the “ne pas” must go before it. Excusez-moi de ne pas être venu. Excuse me for not coming (not having come). Merci de ne pas avoir fumé. Thank you for not having smoked. Je suis désolé de ne pas t’avoir parlé. I’m sorry for not having talked to you.
