In English note the use of “he is” and “she is”. Roger He is tall. He is Swiss. He is a handsome boy. He is an intelligent pupil. In English all of these sentences start with “he is”. But notice what comes after “is”. He is tall. He is Swiss. Tall and Swiss are adjectives. He is a HANDSOME boy. He is an intelligent pupil. Boy and pupil are nouns. The French use “il est” and “elle est” as well. However, we must add “c’est” to that list. Il est grand. Il est suisse. C’est un beau garçon. C’est un élève intelligent. Il est grand. Il est suisse. Grand and suisse are adjectives. Use “il est” or “elle est”. C’est un beau garçon. C’est un élève intelligent. Garçon and élève are nouns, so use c’est instead of “il est” or “elle est”. C’est un beau garçon NOT Il est un beau garçon. C’est un élève intelligent NOT Il est un élève intelligent.
