First Level Significant Aspects of Learning Use language in a range of contexts and across learning Continue to develop confidence and enthusiasm to communicate using the language being learnt Develop an awareness and understanding of patterns and sounds of language Begin to develop an understanding of, interest in and respect for other countries, cultures and languages Appreciate and understand the value of language learning Recognise familiar written words when listening Explore how gesture, expression and emphasis are used to help understanding. Listen, recognise and respond to familiar voices in short, predictable conversations Understand and respond to familiar spoken vocabulary Actively take part in daily routines Listen and join in with stories, song or poem Enjoy engaging with simple and familiar texts on my own and with others using resources to support learning Participate in familiar games, paired speaking and short role plays Take part in simple, paired conversations about themselves giving simple opinions and asking simple questions

Vocabulary Colours Aim to teach at least 5 of the colours at Early Level initially and build up as pupils progress towards 1 st. C’est de quelle couleurWhat colour is it? C’est It is bleublue blancwhite rougered vert green jauneyellow rose pink noirblack gris grey violetpurple marronbrown Tu aimes le bleu?Do you like blue? J’adore le…I love J’aime le… I like Je n’aime pas le…I don’t like Je déteste le…I hate

For Early/First Level, start with about 5 colours only and work your way up to all the colours!

Introducing vocabulary You can try this as an alternative to introducing vocabulary. Make colour cards for and give each group/pair a set. Ask them to listen to the colour and look at the word and then hold up the colour they think it is.

Activité 1 Colour cards

Teacher notes Pupils work in pairs, groups or individually They have a selection of coloured cards in front of them on the table (e.g. cut up coloured paper) They read and listen to the colour on each flashcard and hold up which colour they think it is. Teacher then reveals the colour picture on the slide

Ecoutez et regardez les couleurs en français…

Activité 2 Listening colours

Teacher notes Pupils hold up a colour card (or points to a colour on the following slide) and the others in the class have to say the colour word Can they check by clicking the audio recording on the slide Could play this in teams and win points for each colour said correctly!

Activité 3 Apportez-moi…!

Teacher notes Pupils work in groups Number each person in groups 1 – 4 Teacher chooses a number e.g. les numéros uns Then ask them to bring an object to the front by using the phrase: apportez-moi un objet (bleu) Pupils then race to find something blue and bring it out to the teacher.

Apportez-moi un objet….

Activité 4 C’est de quelle couleur?

Teacher notes This activity can be used to practice using C’est (it is) with colours. Ask the question, c’est de quelle couleur? and then show the pupils the slides. They then have to say C’est bleu or whatever it might be. Please note, that where a word starts with a vowel, we then pronounce the t of c’est You can follow this up by asking pupils to then select objects around the room and then ask the class what colour it is.

C’est C’est means it is C’est grand! It is big! C’est petit! It is small! C’est bleuIt is blue

Usually in French, when a word ends in t, like C’est, then we don’t pronounce the t - it’s silent! C’est Présent Absent

However, if the word following it starts with a vowel, we pronounce the t! C’est énorme! C’est orange. C’est un bébé.

Activité 5 Qu’est-ce qui manque?

Teacher notes Look at the colour slides, which one is missing? One colour will disappear and pupils should say which one is missing. You can add in fermez les yeux, ouvrez les yeux (close your eyes, open your eyes) For the 2 nd part of the activity, pupils can then play the same game in groups by making their own colour cards, laying them out in the middle of the group and then taking it in turns to say fermez les yeux, removing a card, saying ouvrez les yeux and then asking the question, “Qu’est ce qui manque?”

Regardez les couleurs. Qu’est-ce qui manque? Fermez les yeux. Ouvrez les yeux.

Qu’est ce qui manque en groupe!

Teacher notes Pupils can now play the same game in groups using coloured objects or coloured bits of card. Taking turns, each pupil should ask the rest to close their eyes (fermez les yeux) and then remove one object/coloured card from the centre of the table. They can then ask the rest of the group to “ouvrez les yeux” (open your eyes) and use the question “qu’est-ce qui manque?” The others can try and guess the colour e.g. C’est rouge or C’est l’objet rouge.

A vous maintenant!

Mettez les cartes au centre de la table

Activité 6 Course des couleurs!

Teacher notes In groups, pupils place different coloured cards in the centre of their table. Teacher then says a colour and the first person to pick it up in their group, wins the card. The teacher then goes through the remaining colours and the person with the most colour cards, at the end of the game, wins!

Mettez les cartes au centre de la table

Ecoutez la couleur…

Prend la couleur!

Activité 7 Brain training!

Teacher notes The aim of this activity is that pupils say the colour that the word is written in and not the actual word itself. It’s quite tricky but fun to time classes with and see how quickly they can do it!

Brain Training – Les Couleurs

Class colour survey 1.Pupils can practice asking Tu aimes…+ a colour by surveying each other around the class. This can then be linked to creating a graph, tally marks etc. Tu aimes quelle couleur? Means which colour do you like? And could be used as a title for a graph. Combien de personnes aiment le jaune? = How many people like yellow

Embedding the language tip Use French colours for cooperative groups – les rouges, les bleus etc. The French for rainbow groups are “Les groupes arc en ciel” – see next slide! Ask pupils “c’est de quelle couleur?” when reading stories, creating art work etc.

You will find a bank of sample ICT activities which you can use to practise the vocabulary in the classroom. This is not a prescriptive list of activities and you can use or adapt them to suit the needs of your class. Each of the slides contains an image of the website page. If you click on the image it will take you to the page. Alternatively you can use a link address which you will find in the slide notes. ICT Resources online
