2 SAVOIR (to know (facts), to know how) je saisnous savons tu saisvous savez il/elle/on saitils/elles savent participe passé: su

3 Savoir is used to say that someone knows factual information and is often used with que (that), qui, où, quand, comment, or pourquoi. Est-ce que tu sais son numéro de téléphone? Do you know his/her telephone number? Nous savons que tu habites près de l’école. We know that you live near the school. Je ne sais pas pourquoi tu fais ça. I don’t know why you do that.

4 Savoir is used with infinitives to mean to know how to do something. Est-ce que vous savez conduire une voiture? Do you know how to drive a car? Ils ne savent pas jouer au base-ball. They don’t know how to play baseball.

5 When savoir is used in the passé composé it means to find out or discover. J’ai su qu’il y avait un examen. I found out that there was a test.

6 CONNAÎTRE (to know (people, places) to be familiar with) je connaisnous connaissons tu connaisvous connaissez il/elle/on connaîtils/elles connaissent participe passé: connu

7 Ma mère connaît très bien tous mes profs. My mother knows all of my teachers very well. Connaissez-vous Paris? Do you know (are you familiar with) Paris?

8 The passé composé of connaître means met for the first time. Mon père a connu ma mère à l’université. My father met my mother in college.

9 Reconnaître means to recognize and is conjugated like connaître. Reconnaissez-vous ce garçon? - Non, je ne le reconnais pas. Do you recognize this boy ? - No I don’t recognize him.
