3 Depuis is used for actions that were incomplete at said time, c’est à dire, the action is still taking place (continuing). Example: I have been working on this project for two days! (I’m still working on it). Je travaille ce projet depuis 2 jours!

4 1) When followed by a period of time, depuis indicates the duration of an action and is equivalent to "have been + -ing (perfect progressive) + for"* Nous attendons depuis une heure. We've been waiting for an hour. Il parle depuis 5 minutes. He's been speaking for 5 minutes.

5 2) When followed by an event or point in time, depuis indicates the start time of an action and is translated in English by "have been + -en/-ed + since/for" Je suis malade depuis mon arrivée. I've been sick since I got here (since my arrival). Depuis hier, je suis déprimée. I've been depressed since yesterday. Il ne fume pas depuis un an. He hasn't smoked for a year. (He hasn’t been smoking for a year). NOTE: the verbs are in the PRESENT tense, but it’s translated to the past tense. Depuis = present tense of verb!!

6 Here’s the interrogative expression for asking: Depuis quand joues-tu de la flûte? (since when) Since when have you been playing the flute? Je joue de la flûte depuis mars. I’ve been playing the flute since March. Depuis combien de temps est-ce que tu regardes la télé? For how long have you been watching TV? (for how long) Je joue de la flûte depuis 2 mois. I’ve been playing the flute for 2 months.

7 When depuis is followed by a length of time, as in the first example below, it indicates duration and is translated into English by 'for'. When depuis is followed by a date or a point in time, as in the second example, it indicates the starting point and is translated by 'since'. Tex sort avec Tammy depuis un an. Tex has been going out with Tammy for one year. Tex sort avec Tammy depuis septembre. Tex has been going out with Tammy since September.
