Je vais à Londres. – I go to London. J’habite à La Rochelle. – I live in La Rochelle. This also works if you are talking about an area within a city: J’habite à Westminster. – I live in Westminster. En / au + country 1

9 © Boardworks Ltd 2005 9 of 27 GRAMMAR But what about if you want to talk about living in or going to a country? Can you fill in the word which is missing from all four sentences below? J’habite ____ France. Je vais ____ Angleterre. J’habite ____ Ecosse. Je vais ____ Irlande. en But what if you live in Wales? You probably know already that you can’t use en with the French for Wales (Pays de Galles). So what is the rule? En / au + country 2 If the country is masculine (not usually ending in -e) use au. If the country is feminine (usually ending in -e) use en. If the country is plural (usually ending in -s) use aux.

Choose eight countries and write a sentence saying that you are going to, or live in, each one: J’habite… Je vais… au… en… aux… Then, using the same countries or another eight, write a gap-fill exercise for your partner, where they have to fill in the right word out of au / en / aux. Did you notice that most of the European countries we looked at are feminine? En / au + country 4

In English they never change, but in French they change depending on the gender of the noun or person they are describing. This is called agreement. If the noun being described is feminine, we often add an –e. So if you are a boy you say “Je suis anglais” but if you are a girl you say “Je suis anglaise”. Je m’appelle Jennifer Lopez. Je suis américaine. Did you notice that Lance Armstrong says "Je suis américain" whereas Jennifer Lopez says "Je suis américaine" ?
