Les pronoms = small words that replaces a noun or several nouns. I ate the pizza= I ate it Julia and Nancy are seniors in school. = They are seniors in school. We went to the dance. = we went there. The students in French class are very diligent. = they are diligent. My friends saw their teacher at the dance. = They saw them there. Give the books on the desk to my sister please. = Give them to her please. They are my books. Yes they are mine! (Mine replace the books on the desk).

Pronouns have a function in the sentence subjects of the verbs: I = je, j’ Je regarde le film. you = tu Tu ne manges pas. he = il Il ne vends plus ses CDs. she = elle elle nettoie la maison. it = il,elle il dort sous le lit. We = nous, on Nous rangeons nos lits. You = vous vous lavez la salle de bains. They = ils, elles,on Ils vont au cirque.

Some pronouns are direct object of verbs receiving the action Me = me, m’ You= te,t’ Him= le,l’ Her = la,l’ ( don’t confuse her direct object pronoun with her possessive adjective= Her brother is James) It = le, la, l’ (don’t confuse it with subject pronoun it= It is hard) Us = nous You=vous (don’t confuse it with you subject pronoun you= You are late!) To get the direct object in the sentence ask the question what or whom after the verb. I saw Lisa= I saw whom? I saw her We speak well French= We speak well what? we speak it well. They bought a new car= they bought what? they bought it. We watch the film on TV= we watch what on TV? We watch it on TV. The teacher warned Jen and me = She warned whom? She warned us …

Sometimes direct object pronouns could express reflexion onto the subject we call them reflexive pronouns: They may not be obvious all the time or well translated in English language: Myself = me,m’ Yourself = tu, t’ Himself = se, s’ Herself = se, s’ Itself = se, s’ Ourself =nous Youself =vous Themself= se,s’

Verbs containing these pronouns are called in French: Les verbes pronominaux ou les verbes réfléchis Je me lève. ( I wake whom up?)I wake myself up. je me lave. tu te maquilles Il se rase. Elle s’habille bien. Nous nous regardons dans le miroir. Vous vous parlez souvent? Ils se couchent tôt.

On peut changer un verbe de la forme pronominal à la forme non pronominal. Je me réveille. Je le réveille. (le chat). Tu te brosses les dents. Tu les brosses. ( les chevaux). Il se peigne. Il nous peigne.( moi et mes amis). Elle se regarde. Elle me regarde. Nous nous habillons. Nous l’habillons. ( la mariée) Vous vous couchez. Vous le couchez. ( le bébé). Ils se marient ( se marier) ils les marient. (Leurs enfants).
