2 L’imparfait You already know the imparfait is used to:
Say what was happening (not what happened) Say how things were Describe repeated actions Describe actions with no beginning or no end. Physically describe permanent features about people and things. Tell time and weather

3 Le Passé Composé You already know the Passé Composé is used to:
Say what happened Tell what someone did in a set period of time Tell what happened only once. Describe actions that happened at a specific moment in time Describe temporary features about people and things.

4 Comparaison Passé Composé Hier, je suis allé au cinéma.
Une fois, j’ai fait un château de sable. A 5h30 j’ai parlé avec mes amis. Imparfait Quand j’étais petit, j’allais toujours au cinéma. Chaque fois que j’allais à la plage, je faisais un château de sable. Souvent, je parlais avec mes amis.

5 Remember the words that trigger the imparfait:
Toujours/beaucoup Souvent/rarement De temps en temps/ quelquefois Chaque jour/semaine/mois/an Tous les jours/mois/ans Toutes les semaines Comme ci comme ça If you see these words in a sentence in the past tense, use the imparfait!

6 Here are some words that trigger the passé composé:
Hier Une fois/ une occasion Un jour/une semaine/un mois/un an La semaine dernière Any time on a clock (5h30, 8h45…etc) À midi/à minuit Il y a + un/deux/trois+ heures/jours/semaines/mois/ans If you see these words in a sentence in the past tense, use the Passé Composé!

Typically, the Imparfait is the background action. It is the action that was being done first. The passé composé is the interrupting action. It is the action that happened while the first action was already underway.
