2 Uses of the Imperfect The imperfect (imparfait) is the “other” past tense in French. English translations (sample verb to sing): I would sing I used to sing I was singing

3 Formation of the Impefect
Stem = present-tense NOUS form, minus “-ons” Nous chantons stem = chant- Nous choisissons stem = choisiss- Nous vendons stem = vend- Nous allons stem = all- Only ONE irregular: Être Nous sommes stem = ét-

4 Imparfait endings je: -ais nous: -ions tu: -ais vous: -iez
il, elle, on: -ait ils, elles: -aient

5 PARLER stem = nous parlons
je parlais – I used to speak, I would speak, I was speaking nous parlions tu parlais vous parliez il, elle, on parlait ils, elles parlaient

6 FINIR stem: nous finissons
je finissais – I used to finish, I would finish, I was finishing nous finissions tu finissais vous finissiez il, elle, on finissait ils, elles finissaient

7 The ONLY irregular! – ÊTRE stem = ét-
j’étais – I was, I used to be, I was being nous étions tu étais vous étiez il, elle, on était ils, elles étaient c’était = it was
