Lesson 03.07 Le Négatif We have already learned the basic negative construction in French- adding ‘ne (n’)…pas’ to a sentence will make that sentence negative but have you ever wanted to say ‘no one, nothing, never…’? In French we have specific negative expressions to say just that! ne…jamais ne…rien ne…personne ne…plus ne…que ne…ni…ni

Lesson 03.07 Le Négatif ne…jamais- never ne…rien- nothing ne…personne- no one ne…plus-no more/ anymore ne…que- not more than/ only ne…ni…ni- neither nor These negative expressions can be placed in a sentence just the same way as ‘ne…pas’ Examples: I don’t see/ I see no one Je ne vois pas/ Je ne vois personne She doesn’t have her bag/ she has nothing! Elle n’a pas son sac/ Elle n’a rien What do you notice about the placement of the negative expressions in each of these two sentences? With the expression ‘ne…que’ we often add ‘de’ after ‘que’! With ‘ne…ni…ni’ we add a noun in between each part of the negative expression.
