4 ETRE cont. When using ETRE, the past participle makes agreement with the gender and number of the subject. Ex: Elle est allée chez elle. Nous (m/p) / rentrer / tard hier soir. Vous (f/s) / passer / l’examen? Je (m) / descendre / les escaliers. Tu (f) / devenir / professeur.

5 ETRE OR AVOIR Some verbs can use either ETRE or AVOIRbut be careful, because this changes the meaning of the sentence! DESCENDRE, MONTER, PASSER, RENTRER, RETOURNER, SORTIR Ex: Je suis sortie hier soir BUT J’ai sorti la poubelle hier soir.

6 Avoir All non-être verbs use avoir. Avoir does not make agreement with gender or number. Ex: J’ai mangé du jambon. Nous / chanter Elles / danser Ils / finir Nous / être

7 Direct Objects Le/la/les/l’ Make agreement with AVOIR and ETRE Ex: Je l’ai mangée – the “l’” refers to something feminine and singular. Nous aimons le film. Ils chantent la chanson. Est-ce que vous finissez les devoirs (m)?

8 Indirect Objects lui/leur DO NOT MAKE AGREEMENT! Ex: Je lui ai parlé Il leur donne un cadeau. Nous lui parlons. Vous leur offrez du gâteau?
