petit beau laid industriel rural bondé désert chaud froid A B These adjectives are mostly new to students but they can be easily modelled by the teacher in the TL and students can respond in relation to the photos (can add also intensifiers, très/peu). E.g. Teacher points to photo A and asks C’est moderne ou ancien? Très ancien? Photo B: C’est plat (flat action with hand) ou montagneux (making mountains with arms). Encourage them to use “Je pense que...” (Photos: A- Les arènes de Nimes, B- Les Alpes, C- Terrasse du Café des “Machines de Nantes”) C 2

This lesson aims to enable learners to practise asking questions about photos and practice “est-ce que...?” They start off with this slide and try to make as many questions as possible to ask you about the photo on slide 5. (They haven’t seen the photo yet).

5 Show them the photo and they ask you questions
Show them the photo and they ask you questions. Point to things as you describe the photo in response to their questions. They are bound to ask where the photo is. It is a sea side village in Québec. There is a map on the following slide for you to explain in the TL where Québec is. Keep this lively and interesting and in the TL – research has proven that students learn best when exposed to ‘rich TL input’ i.e. lots of TL that they can access because it is at the right level and there is support to aid comprehension.

Où est le Québec? Le Québec est une province du Canada en Amérique du Nord There are a few slides here to give some more information about Québec. It is another country where French is spoken and it’s likely that learners don’t know much about it at all. The teacher can talk through the information, using the photos as a guide. It should only be about 5 mins - at some future lessons, it would be good to reprise the slides and see how much learners can tell you themselves, as these are mostly structures and vocab that they are learning.
