Je m’appelle Caroline et j'habite à Paris. Il y a trois grandes chambres et deux salles de bains dans ma maison. Il y a huit personnes dans ma famille : J'ai deux frères et trois sœurs. Mon amie Marie a seulement cinq personnes dans sa famille. This starter activity is for orientation. With lower sets, I suggest reading it out loud once to allow them to tune in, then a second time where by they have to make a signal each time you mention a number. Then ask them in French how many numbers all together and perhaps if they can quickly write down a list of all of the numbers but in ascending order (like they do in the lottery). This text could also be used to introduce the question “il y a combien de personnes dans ta famille?” and you can model the answer “Il y a ... Personnes dans ma famille” Perhaps ask a few of the better ones – you could have written up the first letters of each word in this phrase on the board to help support them as they say this answer and/or question.

The way to do this listening would be to put the answers up first (i.e. The symbols for brothers & sisters) and get the students to script the dialogues that they think they will hear. This would definitely be my recommendation for a top/second set task with this listening. After the listening, give them a few minutes to ask each other the questions – Tu as (as-tu, est-ce que tu as) des frères et soeurs? Il y a combien de personnes dans ta famille? See next slide.
