The French declared war against Prussia and Austria, whilst in the midst of the French Revolution.
The French Revolution was in it’s 3rd year of action. It began because the common people were unhappy with the extravagance of the monarchy when they were starving. The French Revolution resulted in the demise of the monarchy and Marie Antoinette’s beheading. Events at that time When Marie Antoinette was told that the people of France could not afford bread she replied ‘Let them Eat cake’. It was this lack of sympathy for the commoners that got her guillotined.

‘La Marseillaise’ was first sang publically on the streets of Paris by volunteers The composer was almost guillotined soon after writing this masterpiece. "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin" was the original name of the song meaning ‘War song for the Army of Rine’ The anthem became the marching song of the national guard of Marseille ‘La Marseillaise’ didn’t become the national song until When it became the national song, ‘La Marseillaise’ was banned under the empire. The anthem was dedicated to a officer ‘Marshal Nicolas Luckner’. ‘La Marseillaise’ became the national song permanently in 1879 on the 15th of July.
