2 Avignon Palace of the Popes (Le Palais des Papes) – papal residence, fortress and palace from the 14 th century Survivng four arches of the Pont d’Avignon spanning the Rhone. It was built between 1177 and 1185, and destroyed 40 years later by Louis VII of France during the Crusades. It was re-built, but partially collapsed when the Rhone flooded, and later abandoned.
