3 PREPOSITIONS AS YOU KNOW THEM In English, when we are talking about travel, we almost always say, “I’m going to Paris, then going to Italy, then we’ll cross over to Asia and come home to Colorado.” When we speak of our experiences, we say, “When I was in Paris…” or “When I was in France…” or “When I was traveling in Asia,” and/or “I live in Colorado.” We also might say, “We’re flying from Paris to Tokyo. We go from Japan to the U.S. We are from Colorado.” The prepositions in these examples are uniform. In English, we always use “to,” “in” or “from.”

4 PREPOSITIONS AS YOU KNOW THEM When speaking French, your instict: Je vais à Paris, et à Italie, et à Asie et finalement je retourne à Colorado. Quand j’étais dans France… Quand j’étais dans Paris… J’ai voyagé dans Asie… j’habite dans Colorado. Nous volons de Paris à Tokyo. Nous allons de Japon à les Etats-Unis. Nous sommes de Colorado. Unfortunately, your instinct is incorrect! 

5 FIRST, LET’S RE-ESTABLISH… à = to/at de = from/of If you get these mixed up or do not know them, it will be very hard to communicate in French. You could completely change the meaning of what you want to say, if you confuse them!

6 PREPOSITIONAL GRAMMAR REFRESHER To remember the grammar of the prepositions à and de in French, sometimes it helps to think that “e” is a troublemaker, and “u” is the peacemaker! à + le = à + la = à la à + l’ = à l’ à + les = au aux nouns: le café, la maison, l’église, les funérailles. Je vais au café pour le petit-déjeuner. Après, je vais à la maison de Lucile. Puis, je vais à l’église pour parler aux funérailles de Jean-Paul Florentine.

7 PREPOSITIONAL GRAMMAR REFRESHER To remember the grammar of the prepositions à and de in French, sometimes it helps to think that “e” is a troublemaker, and “u” is the peacemaker! Except in the case of “des.” The “e” deserves a second chance! de + le = de + la = de la de + l’ = de l’ de + les = du des nouns: le café, le zoo, la maison, la gym, l’église, l’école, les funérailles, les Halles. 1. Je vais du café au zoo. 2. Je vais de la maison de Julie à la gym. 3. Je vais de l’église à l’école. 4. Je vais des funérailles aux Halles.

8 ONE MORE THING… The preposition “en” will figure into your geographical lessons… Avoid using “dans,” unless specifically told to do so!

11 EXAMPLES WITH CITIES Tomorrow, I will fly from Paris to Tokyo. Demain, je volerai de Paris à Tokyo. Yesterday, we went from Los Angeles to Venice! Hier, nous sommes allés de Los Angeles à Venise! I’m from London. Je suis de Londres. At noon, the plane will land in Barcelona. A midi, l’avion atterrira à Barcelone.

12 EXAMPLES WITH COUNTRIES… OH NO! I would like to go to France one day. J’aimerais aller en France un jour. If we could, we would fly from France to Japan, non-stop! Si nous pouvions, nous volerions de France au Japon, sans escale! I am from Argentina, but I live in Israel. Je suis d’Argentine, mais j’habite en Israël. The trip of my dreams is from the United States to Canada, from Canada to Germany, from Germany to India, from India to Australia, then I would return to the United States. Le voyage de mes rêves est des Etats-Unis au Canada, du Canada en Allemagne, d’Allemagne en Inde, d’Inde en Australie, puis je retournerais aux Etats-Unis.

13 MORE PRACTICE! If I were rich, I would travel to Asia. Si j’étais riche, je voyagerais en Asie. My sister love Spanish, and if she could, she would study in Mexico or in Spain. Ma soeur adore l’espagnol, et si elle pouvait, elle étudierait au Mexique ou en Espagne. My family is from Boston, but we moved to Peru when I was little. We love living in Lima, but if we could return to America, we would like it. Ma famille est de Boston, mais nous avons démé nagé au Pérou quand j’étais petite. Nous adorons habiter à Lima, mais si nous pouvions retourner en Amérique, nous l’aimerions. If you (informal) could spend a month in Great Britain, would you go to Wales or to Scotland?
