I picked some blackberries. I went fishing in the river. I had lunch in a pub. I had a picnic. I went for a ride by steam train I went mountain biking. I went canoeing on a lake The vocabulary for the initial stages is presented in starter format – how many of the French phrases can the students work out for themselves. As they identify each one, click on the tick beside the French for any given phrase to reveal the English translation.

This, and the next 9 slides, are provided to present the vocabulary, and to introduce the pictures to the students. If you are using an Interactive Whiteboard, click on the countryside scene in the bottom right. The French at the top will disappear (for 15 seconds) and the student has to fill in the gaps at the bottom of the screen. After 15 seconds, the correct version will reappear at the top, and the you will be able to compare the two. Five seconds later, the student’s version will disappear. Canoeing J’ P U T A V SteamTrain The aim of this slide is to get students to practise saying the phrases in the form of a game. The initial letters of the sentences are provided to encourage the students to say the right thing, while the English clue is provided to avoid ambiguity. To start the slide, click on the face in the middle. The green bubble will then appear. Once you are satisfied with the student’s French, click on the green bubble, and the yellow one will appear, and so on. Students have to try to complete all 8 bubbles in 45 seconds (before the whistle goes). After a couple of goes with this slide, the students will become familiar with it; the next two slides work in the same way, but are there to keep the students thinking. Students nominate a circle ( or come up and click it on the Whiteboard). The circle will drop away, and more often than not, a picture will be revealed. The student whose turn it is has 6 seconds to say what the picture is in French before it disappears. If you want to have a scoring system, the student scores 2 points for his team for saying the sentence correctly while the picture is still on the screen. If the picture has disappeared, a member of the opposing team can name the picture for 1 point. For more speaking practice, use the CountrysideConnect4 file. Load the file in, and select the “fill” icon. At the bottom of the screen, select a colour, and click on it with the left mouse button. Then move to another colour, and click on it using the right mouse button. When the students say the phrase corresponding to a picture, move to the lowest available circle, and click on either the left or right mouse button to fill the circle with the appropriate team’s colour. 29 30 31 32 33 34 35

This slide, and the next two slides, are designed to try to broaden vocabulary, so not every student visits a castle, runs away from a bull and picks some blackberries. If you are using the whiteboard interactively, the students could label the pictures themselves, after finding the words in a dictionary. Il y a trois semaines, j’ai passé une journée à la campagne avec mon frère. Nous sommes partis de chez nous à pied. First, divide the class into 2 teams. Each person in the class must predict what is behind the yellow box; if you have individual whiteboards, the students can write out what they think each word should be. Then click on the yellow box to reveal the correct answer. All those students who are right score 1 point for their team. Note that able students should usually be able to dismiss 1 of the three answers based on the rest of the sentence, but to keep the game element, the other answers may well be equally valid, even if they just happen not to be the one in the text. gare station service ville
