2 Negatives ‘I ‘I don’t know’ ‘Je ‘Je ne sais pas’.

3 How are they written ? As we know, negatives in French are made up of two words, ‘ne’ and something else (e.g. ‘pas’) These words are usually written around the verb. Je ne ne pense pas. Nous n’ n’ avons pas.

4 Special rules for negatives: Be aware that in French, when using negatives negatives relating to PLURAL PLURAL things, we use ‘de’ after the negative (not (not ‘des’), and we drop the reference to the number. J’ ai deux freres. Je n nn n’ ai pas de freres.

5 Negatives in Different Tenses. When an AUXILARY AUXILARY verb is used, the negative construction is placed around that auxilary, NOT NOT around the main verb. Je ne vais pas acheter une jupe. Elle n’ est pas partie. Nous n’ avons pas perdu. Je n’ avais pas acheté. Il n’ aurait pas vendu le velo.

6 Negatives & direct / indirect object pronouns. The negative construction goes around the object pronoun AND AND the verb clause / auxilary verb. Je ne l’ aime pas. Il ne l’ a pas vendu. Tu n’ y vas pas visiter. Elle ne lui donne pas. Je ne le lui a aa ai pas donné

7 Some more special cases… Negative reflexives: Tu ne te leves pas. Negative reflexive imperative (command): Ne te leves pas !

8 And another special case… ONLY ne …. que = ONLY Je n’ ai qu’un frere Nous n’avons acheté que du pain.

9 Negatives (level 7): Infinitive Negation: ne pas sortir ne pas tomber Personne ne pense … Rien ne change. Aucun homme ne croit... Pas une femme ne sait… Subject Negation: Not to go out Not to fall No-one thinks… Nothing changes. Not any man believes No woman knows..
