5 Creating the past participle  Er verbs- drop the “er” and add é  Ir verbs- drop the “ir” and add i  Re verbs- drop the “re” and add u  Irregular Verbs- Memorize them and refer to your gold sheet

6 How to choose between être and avoir  Most verbs take avoir in the passé composé  Only 17 verbs take être in the passé composé (plus all reflexive verbs)  You can memorize these verbs using the house of être or the acronym Dr.& Mrs.Vandertrampp.

10 When être is your helping verb in the passé composé, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject.  Agreement Elles sont allées au cinema.  No agreement Elles ont mangé une pizza.

13 fyi  There are some verbs that change which helping verb they use depending on the meaning used. For example: Passer Je suis passé(e) par le magasin. J’ai passé le weekend chez mes grands-parents.  Also all reflexive verbs use être in the Passé Composé. Past Participle agrees with reflexive pronoun only if it is the Direct Object: For example: se laver Je me suis lavé(e). (me is the D.O.) Je me suis les mains. (no agreement-mains is D.O.) J’ai lavé la voiture.
