Some verbs using être some verbs use être instead of avoir as the helping verb in passé composé. Most of those verbs are verbs of motion, such as tomber, aller, arriver, and sortir. Using être as a helping verb (auxilary), the past participle has to agree with the subject of the verb.

Changing Gears Using two blank sheets of paper of different colors, each student writes in one verbs that use avoir and on the other verbs that use être. ** on the back of each sheet of paper, student writes three sentences with verbs using auxiliary avoir and v.rbs using auxiliary être. Then, students get to write sentences on the board at the front of the classroom.
