2 The passé composé is used in French to answer the question: 'What happened?'
Thus… La tarte aux pommes est tombée par terre. Notre chien a commencé à la manger. J’ai essayé de la sauver. Le chien m’a mordue. Je l’ai tué. J'aime vraiment les tartes aux pommes. At this point, write a time line on the board. Illustrate that each of these is a distinct line on the timeline. Suggest then that the story might be added to…”It was a beautiful day…Mother had just baked a delicious apple pie and set it on the windowsill to cool. A light breeze was blowing through the open window, sending a sweet aroma to…blah blah blah” What is all this? Background! Description! This is a different past tense!

3 But in narrations, you also have past tenses that answer the question :
What was going on when something else happened? Ex : He was reading the paper when the phone rang. And questions of description. Ex : It was a cold and stormy night. In French, the tense that answers these questions is the imparfait. The imparfait also answers the question of 'What used to be?'

The imparfait of ÊTRE : J'étais Nous étions Tu étais Vous étiez Il/Elle/On était Ils/Elles étaient

10 Try with a reflexive verb…

13 Usually, when verbs like être, avoir, pouvoir, vouloir, and savoir are in a past narration, they will be in the imparfait, since they most likely describe a past state of being or condition. However, when these verbs (and others like them) occur, use the passé composé of these verbs only to indicate a change of state or of condition.
