2 Quick Review: A compound tense, having two parts Uses: describes EVENTS- or tells you “what happened in the story” FFirst part, a helping verb: AAVOIR -or- ÊTRE ai suis as es a est avons sommes avez êtes ont sont SSecond part, a past participle: RRegular -er » -é -ir » -i -re » -u IIrregular: dit, écrit, été, fait, lu, mis, répondu, vu, etc…

NOTE: There are often ‘time marker” words that let you know, that P.C. is required: For example: Hier, aujourd’hui, soudain, d’abord, ensuite, après, enfin, un jour, une fois…. Or if the event is repeated a specific number of times, use P.C. = Il a mangé 8 fois!)

4 Quick Review A simple tense, having one part FFormation: TTake the present-tense nous form of the verb. RRemove the –ons. AAdd: -ais -ais -ait -ions -iez -aient IIrregular in the imparfait: ( only 1 verb!!!) ÊÊtre: étais, étais, était étions, étiez, étaient AAttention: VVerbs ending in –cer and -ger have minor spelling changes. Present tense: Nous mangeons SO- ons= mange + endings except for nous/ vous mangeais mangeait mangions mangiez mangeaient

5 Uses of the Passé Composé: VS SSingle, completed events in the past: tells what happened in the story, equivalent to the -ed form of the verb in english9 simple past) Je suis allé à la plage la semaine passée. NNumbered completed events in the past: Je suis allé à la plage trois fois pendant l’été. ---even when a number is only implied: Combien de fois es-tu allé à la plage pendant l’été.? Uses of the imparfait: translated as “was/were____ing OR “used to ____”  Sets the scene of a story or it is a continuous action that can be interrupted by events in the past. Je faisais les devoirs à minuit. Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. DDescriptions (States of mind, States of being= physical characteristics location, time, weather, age, etc…) Il était un bon étudiant. Hier il faisait froid et il pleuvait. Nous habitions à Lyon quand nous étions jeunes RRepetition : Habitual events in the past: J’allais à la plage chaque été..
