3 Nouns and Articles Noun A person, place, thing, or idea In French, nouns are either singular or plural, and either masculine or feminine Article Little words used to introduce nouns, such as a, an, and the Indefinite Articles a boy, an apple, some students Use indefinite articles when you aren’t referring to a specific noun ■ “a” boy instead of “the” boy

4 Indefinite articles in French  Articles must agree with the noun’s gender and number  “Some” is often omitted in English, but “des” cannot be dropped in French.

6 Gender  All nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine) The gender is obvious with people ■ UNE femme ■ UN homme For things, think of gender as part of the spelling of the word ■ UN tableau ■ UNE chaise  UN or UNE ___fille ___femme ___copain

7 Number To make a noun plural  Usually, add S to the end of the noun. Un garçon  des ____________________  Add X to the end of nouns that end in “eau.” Ex. Un tableau  des _______________  Change “al” to AUX Ex. Un animal  des ________________________  Use a plural article. Ex. Une fille  __________ filles

9 La Liaison  In pronunciation, liaison means pronouncing a normally silent consonant at the end of one word because the next word begins with a vowel.  Exemples un ami des amis Comment allez-vous? Comment vous appelez-vous?
