6
Les hypothèses issues de la TCE
H1 tce : - Asset specificity of the good + Good’s volume uncertainty H2 tce : - Concurrently-sourced - Performance uncertainty H3 tce : Kaoru : H1tce : The greater the asset specificity of the good, the higher the percentage of its requirements the firm will produce internally. Therfore, moderately asset-specific goods will be concurrently sourced. H1 tce : make to protect against supplier opportunism H2tce : The greater the good’s volume uncertainty, the higher the percentage of its requirements the firm will produce internally. Thereforce, goods irth moderate levels of volume uncertainty will be concurrently sourced H2 tce Make to better able to coordinate and adapt H3tce: the greater the performance uncertainty of the good, the higher the percentage of its reequirements the firm will produce internally. Goods with a moderte level of performance uncertainty will be concurrently sourced H3 tce : make to align incentives by using authority E. Chiapello et P. Gilbert –Master Recherche
7
Les hypothèses issues de l’économie néo-classique
Good’s volume uncertainty + H2 néo : + + Performance uncertainty H3 néo : Concurrently-sourced Economies d’échelles (for the firm and its suppliers) + H4 néo : Kaoru: H2 Néo: The greater the good’s volume uncertainty, the more likely the good’s volume uncertainty, the more likely the firm will concurently source H2 néo : make to fully utilitize capacity, buy to gain flexibility H3 néo; the greater the performance uncertainty of the good, the more likely the firm will concurrently source H3 néo : make to better specify and evaluate, buy to benchmark H4 néo : the greater scope economies for both the firm and tis suppliers to produce the good, the more likely the firm will concurrently source H4 néo : make to enjoy lower costs, buy to gain lower prices E. Chiapello et P. Gilbert –Master Recherche
8
Expertise of the firm and its suppliers + + H5 cap : Concurrently-sourced + Good’s technological uncertainty H6 cap : Kaoru : H5 cap : the greater the expertise of both the firm and its suppliers, the more likely the firm will concurrently source H5 cap : make to leverage competencies / buy to learn from suppliers H6 cap : the greater the good’s technological uncertainty, the more likely the firm will concurrently source H6 cap : make to understand and interpret, buy to gain diverse views E. Chiapello et P. Gilbert –Master Recherche

Opérationnalisation des variables : variable dépendante
Y = X1 + X2 + X3 + X4 + X5 + X6 + Xc + Y : Le choix du mode d’approvisionnement Evalué par 8 possibilités : « For the past fiscal year, which best describes how you source progressive stamping dies ? » (1) All done internally (either within your plant or from a division which your firm shares a common corporate parent) (2) All purchased from external suppliers Both done internally and purchased from external suppliers : Vincent (3) 0-10% (5) 26-49% (7) 75-90% (4) 11-25% (6) 50-74% (8) Over 90% E. Chiapello et P. Gilbert –Master Recherche

Small manufacturing firms and low levels of technological change No buyer/supplier alliances or other forms of organizing Limites liées à la méthode A cross-sectional survey method - respondent bias Metal forming industry limit government contracting The repondents from the sourcing firms – less accuracy on supplier-related characteristics Kaoru E. Chiapello et P. Gilbert –Master Recherche
22
Perspectives Extensions of this study can be built on its findings
The determinants of the mix of internal vs. external sourcing Different antecedents to the decisions of sourcing mode choice vs. percentage of internal production The performance implications for decision of concurrent sourcing Contractual relation with suppliers Kaoru E. Chiapello et P. Gilbert –Master Recherche
