2 1. Reflexive verbs  In most sentences, the subject and object of the action are separate.  Ex. “I washed the dog.”  “I” is the subject  “the dog” is the object being washed  In other cases, the subject and the object are the same thing.  “I washed myself.”  The action “reflects back” onto the subject!

3 Reflexive Verbs (Present)  A verb is reflexive when the subject both performs and receives the action of the verb (ex. “I dressed myself.”). Since the subject also receives the action, in French an additional pronoun is needed. This is called the reflexive pronoun. Usually these verbs are associated with hygiene or self care. Se Laver Je me lave Tu te laves Il/elle/on se lave Nous nous lavons Vous vous lavez Ils/elles se lavent S’habiller Je m’ habille Tu t’ habilles Il/elle/on s’ habille Nous nous habillons Vous vous habillez Ils/elles s’ habillent

4 2. Switching back and forth (Present)  Je me  tu te  Tu te laves?  Oui, je me lave.  Nous nous  Vous vous  Nous nous habillons?  Oui, vous vous habillez.  Example: Conversation p.R50 (text)  Read aloud with a partner  Les devoirs: Workbook, R33-35 #s1,4, 5,6

5 3. Negative  To make the statement negative, the ne is placed before the reflexive pronoun, and the pas follows the verb.  Ex: Je me reveille  Je ne me reveille pas.  Il s’habille.  Il ne s’habille pas.  Nous nous lavons.  Nous ne nous lavons pas.  Les Devoirs:  Workbook: R35 #7

6 4. Passé Composé  For reflexive verbs you form the passé composé with the verb Être.  *Note the need for Subject verb agreement in both number and gender. Masculin Je me suis lavé Tu t’es lavé Il s’est lavé On s’est lavés Nous nous sommes lavés Vous vous êtes lavé(s) Ils se sont lavés Féminin Je me suis lavée Tu t’es lavée elle s’est lavée On s’est lavées Nous nous sommes lavées Vous vous êtes lavée(s) Elles se sont lavées

7 Passé Composé (cont)  Please note, when a body part, or something other than the actual subject becomes the object, then you do not need subject verb agreement. Agreement Elle s’est brossée. Nous nous sommes lavées. No Agreement Elle s’est brossé les dents. Nous nous sommes lavé les cheveux. Les Devoirs: Workbook R35, #5&6, but switch to Passé Composé

8 5. Passé Composé (négatif)  In the negative, the ne and pas go around the reflexive pronoun and the verb Être.  Il ne s’est pas lavé.  Nous ne nous sommes pas réveillés.  Elles ne sont pas dépêchée.  Les Devoirs: Workbook R35, #7 but switch to Passé Composé
