11 You Tube Video about the Zodiac Constellations

12 History of Zodiac Constellations
and Astrology The zodiac, derived from the Greek word meaning "circle of animals" is believed to have developed in ancient Egypt and later adopted by the Babylonians. Early astrologers knew it took 12 lunar cycles or months, for the sun to return to its original position. They identified 12 constellations that linked to the progression of the seasons and assigned them names of certain animals and persons (in Babylonia, for example, the rainy season was found to occur when the Sun was in a certain constellation which they named Aquarius, or water bearer). Stars move across the sky on a regular schedule, much like the sun. At various times of year, different constellations appear at sunset. The Babylonians are generally credited with the birth of astrology. Their astrological charts helped them to predict the recurrence of seasons and certain celestial events.  Around 2000 B.C., Babylonian astrologers believed that the Sun, Moon, and the five planets known at that time (Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus) possessed distinct powers. In modern astrology, each planet is associated with two signs, and the Sun and Moon with one each. The sun, the moon, and the planets travel on a set elliptical path through the sky as the Earth rotates. There are 13 constellations that they pass through known as the stars of the Zodiac. In the previous slides we saw the 12 zodiac signs but as we learned in the you tube video there is a 13th sign, Ophiucus.

13 The vernal equinox marks the first day of spring and occurs at the intersection of the ecliptic and the celestial equator. The vernal equinox also marks the zero point of the Zodiac. In other words, the starting point of the zodiac is Aries, not Aquarius.

14 Le Zodiaque or L’Horoscope
Astrologers use 12 of these constellations as signs of the Zodiac, omitting Ophiucus to make predictions. Unlike astronomy, astrology is not a science. Signs differ from constellations, bearing only a loose reference to one another.  The signs of the zodiac are subdivided into four groups: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Fire – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Water – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Air – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Earth – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

15 What’s Your Sign ? Your zodiac sign date refers to the position of the sun at the time you were born. Your zodiac characteristics are loosely based on characteristics of the planets, each planet rules two signs. For example: Mercury represents the intellectual part of your personality – Gemini and Virgo. Venus represents love – Taurus and Libra. Mars represents active energy – Aries and Scorpio Jupiter shows how the socialization process works – Sagittarius and Pisces Saturn, also a social planet, defines limits and provides focus – Capricorn and Aquarius Uranus represents individualism – Aquarius Neptune represents the spiritual side – Pisces
