Its all about « mois », the « months » that are important!

janvier février mars Did you notice that we DO NOT capitalize the months in French?

avril mai juin Le Poisson dAvril

juillet août septembre « La Vacance » La Rentrée

octobre novembre décembre La Toussaint

To say things happen during a certain season… Au printemps (in the spring) En été (in the summer) En automne (in the fall) En hiver (in the winter) Au printemps, il pleut beaucoup.

Nothing in the French date is capitalized! Can you believe it? Nothing in the French date is capitalized!

To say that an event happened « on » a specific date, use the normal date format. Le 19 mars Le 31 octobre You do NOT need to add « sur » « dans » Sur le 19 mars Dans le 4 juillet

Jan. 24, 2010 March 19, 1983 July 14, 1789 Feb. 16, 1996 June 9, 2011 le vingt-quatre janvier, 2010 le dix-neuf mars, 1983 le quatorze juillet, 1789 le seize février, 1996 le neuf juin, 2011

It is possible, and even common, in day to day activities, to give the date using all numbers. Par exemple: 19/5/12 9/6/12 HOWEVER, the ORDER of the the date, en français, remains THE SAME as the long format. This means that the month and day are REVERSED!

Since the month number and date number are switched, the following are true… June 9 would be written as 9/6 April 17 would be written as 17/4 Aug. 1 would be written as 1/8 Dec. 10 would be written as 10/12 Oct. 8 would be written as 8/10 How might this cause some problems for English speakers?
