2 Passé Composé w/ Avoir The past tense is formed with a helping verb:
Avoir = to have (Avoir is used when there is a direct object; and answers the question What? or Whom ? J’ai mangé une pomme.) Plus a past participle of the verbs: - er verbs - ir verbs - re verbs Parler  parl + é = parlé Finir  fin + i = fini Vendre  vend + u = vendu

4 Passé Composé w/ Être The past tense is formed with a helping verb:
Être = to be (Être is used to express motion or a change in state. Je suis allé(e) au cinéma.) The past particple MUST agree in number & gender with the subject of the sentence. Plus a past participle of the verbs: er verbs Aller  all + é = allé(e) ir verbs Venir  ven + u = venu(e) re verbs Descendre  descend + u = descendu(e)

6 Passé Composé One or more events or actions that began and ended in the past. Je suis allé(e) en France. J’ai visité les monuments. J’ai pris le petit déjeuner, j’ai mis mon manteau et je suis sorti(e). A single event J’ai voyagé en France l’année dernière.

7 Passé Composé Change in physical or mental state at a precise moment or for an isolated cause. J’ai eu peur quand le chien a aboyé.

8 L’imparfait Expresses an ongoing action that focuses on past actions or conditions as processes. Qu’est-ce que tu faisais quand tu habitais à Paris? Je visitais des monuments et des musées. Est-ce que tu avais des cours l’après-midi? Non, j’avais mes cours ce matin.

9 L’imparfait Describes things or people in the past.
Il avait 12 ans quand il jouaient du piano. Mes amis étaient contents et amusants. Ils étuidiaient tout le temps et s’intéressaient à leur travail. Mais ils savaient s’amuser aussi.

10 Imperfect Tense expresses ongoing action or background description.
L’imparfait The Imperfect and Passé Composé can be in the same sentence. The Imperfect provides the background for the event that is stated in the Passé Composé. PC PC PC PC Il était une fois, il y avait une petite fille qui s’appelait Cinderella. Elle était la plus belle de la famille. Elle avait des belles-soeurs qui étaient mechantes et qui n’aimaient pas Cinderella. L’aînée est entrée dans la salle et lui a demandé à préparer le dîner. Imperfect Tense expresses ongoing action or background description.

11 L’imparfait Describes time, weather, or an action that was going on when another event happened. Il était 7 heures quand elle est rentrée. Quand ils sont sortis du restaurant il pleuvait beaucoup. Je lisais quand Pierre a frappé à la porte.

12 L’imparfait A condition (“Si clause”) Interrupted action
Si j’étais grand je jouerais au basket. Interrupted action I was doing HW when my mom got home. Action that was going on WHEN this happened. Je faisais mes devoirs quand ma mère est rentrée. Imparfait Passé composé

13 Exceptions and Special Cases
Several verbs usually conjugated with étre in the PC are conjugated with avoir when they have direct objects. Monter / Descendre Le chasseur a monté nos bagages. Mais nous avons descendus nos valises tout seuls.

Entrer / Rentrer / Sortir Je n’ai pas encore entré les données. Qui a rentré le lait? Ell a sorti son mouchoir.

The verb passer is conjugated with être in PC when it means “to come by, to stop by, to visit or to be over”. Le facteur est déjà passé. Hier ma cousine est passée me voir. Le pire est passée.

16 Exceptions and Special Cases
Most other times passer is conjugated with the verb avoir. Elle a passé son permit de conduire. Ils ont passé une année en Suisse.
