Les négatifs These expressions are used the same way as ne…pas.
The end of each of these expressions takes the place of pas! That means they go AROUND the conjugated verb. In the passé composé, the helping verb is the conjugated verb. Personne is an exception, it follows the past participle.

Personne ne et Rien ne You can use the negative expressions personne ne… and rien ne… as the subject of a sentence. Note that you do NOT use pas after the verb. The verb is always in the “il” form. Personne ne répond au téléphone. (No one is answering the phone.) Rien n’a changé ici. (Nothing has changed here.) Rien ne… is often used as a response to a question with se passer and arriver, which both mean “to happen.” Qu’est-ce qui se passe? Rien ne se passe. Qu’est-ce qui est arrivé? Rien n’est arrivé.

Qu’est-ce qui s’est passé après l’école? Qui éteint l’ordinateur? Quelque chose est arrivé à l’arbitre? Qui est allé à la boulangerie? Personne n’a débarassé la table. Rien ne s’est passé après l’école. Personne n’éteint l’ordinateur. Rien n’est arrivé à l’arbitre. Personne n’est allé à la boulangerie.
