1 L’Impératif The Imperative is an important tense in French language. Contrary to other tenses, the Imperative is only used with 3 persons subjects: TU, NOUS, VOUS but they are not WRITTEN, they are IMPLIED in the sentence. The Imperative is used for many purposes: UN ORDRE: “Fais tes devoirs!” “Rentrez avant la nuit!” UNE DEMANDE: “Passe-moi le sel, s’il te plaît.” UNE INVITATION: “Passez à la maison quand vous voulez.” “Prends encore de la tarte.” UN CONSEIL: “Prends un médicament et dors bien.” UNE INTERDICTION: “ NE mange PAS de bonbons!” “NE sautez PAS sur les lits!”

2 Comment forme-t-on l’Impératif? VERBS –ER: drop the –s from the tu form of the present tense verb: Ex: mange tes fruits. va à l’école. VERBS –IR and –RE, the –s remains: Ex: finis ton travail. prends un peu de soupe, c’est bon pour la santé. VERBES IRREGULIERS: AVOIR et Être : avoir: aie/ayons/ayez => Aie de la patience. Être: sois/soyons/soyez => Soyez gentils avec votre sœur.

3 NEGATION DE L’IMPERATIF In negative commands, the NE precedes the verb and the PAS follows it….. Ex: NE bois PAS de café après 16h00. NE mangez PAS vos ongles. N’allons PAS à la plage, il pleut. NE soyez PAS si jaloux de votre sœur ! NE dis PAS de mensonges.
