La Grammaire- les Prepositions

What is a preposition? Prepositions are words that describe the relationship between two nouns. They cannot stand alone. Example: Book and elephant - simply putting these two words next to each other doesn’t make sense because we don’t understand the relationship between them. The book is near the elephant. - Using the preposition “near” helps us understand the relationship of these two nouns.

Les Prépositions en français When you use these prepositions (the ones on your list), you must include the definite article. It’s the same in English! → The cat is under the table. Le chat est sous la table. REVIEW: Definite articles mean “THE” in English. In French, they are le, la, & les.

Sur On Le pirate est sur la table.

Sous Under Le pirate est sous la table.

Dans In Le pirate est dans la cuisine.

Devant In front of Le pirate est devant la maison.

Derrière Behind Le pirate est derrière le sofa.

Entre Between Le pirate est entre la lampe et le sofa.

Prepositions with “de”

Loin de Far from Le pirate est loin du sofa.

Près de Close to/near Le pirate est près du sofa.

À côté de Next to Le pirate est à côté de la lampe.

En face de Facing/ across from Le pirate est en face de la télé.

À gauche de To the left of Le pirate est à gauche de la lampe.
