On conjugue! [Avoir et Etre] It is very important to learn and practise using the conjugations of verbs in French.

The two most important verbs in French are: Avoir (to have), and Etre (to be).

Avoir – to have JeJ’ai TuTu as Il / Elle / On / JennaIl a NousNous avons VousVous avez Ils / EllesIls ont

Etre – to be JeJe suis TuTu es Il / Elle / On / JennaIl est NousNous sommes VousVous êtes Ils / EllesIls sont

These are in the present tense… That means that they talk about something that is happening now, for example; J’ai une banane. (I have a banana) Je suis colère. (I am angry)

You already know how to use these verbs…! J’ai treize ans. Je suis néo-zélandais(e). Nous avons fini. Vous êtes prêts?

Practise makes perfect! Learning the verb conjugations in French is a little bit like learning your times tables; you cannot really be taught them by somebody else! The best way to learn them is off by heart, by copying them out, saying them out loud, and then using them in sentences. So guess what you are going to do now…? That’s right! Go back to the slides with the verb tables on them and write them down in your book. Every night this week you need to copy them out (again), and say them out loud to yourself (over and over again). Try to write some simple sentences using the correct form of the verbs.
