L’imparfait/imperfect:

The imperfect is another past tense which is used in three different circumstances: 1)Descriptions in the past:  Descriptions setting the scene: c’était en automne: it was in autumn. Il faisait nuit: It was dark Les étoiles brillaient: the stars were shining  Descriptions of people: Daniel était grand, il avait de longs cheveux noirs: Daniel was tall, he had long black hair. Elle était une femme méchante: She was a bad lady.  To show descriptions of feelings, attitudes and mental and emotional states in the past: Juliette était jalouse de Daniel parce qu’il aimait Sophie: Juliette was jealous of Daniel because he liked Sophie.

2)Repeated Actions in the past: (the equivalent of “used to” in English): Quand j’étais jeune, je faisais du sport tous les jours. when I was young I used to play sport everyday. Quand il était petit, il allait chez ses grands-parents tous les week-ends. When he was little he used to go to his grandparents place every weekend. Nous allions à la plage chaque été. We used to go to the beach every summer.

3) To express incomplete actions in the past (usually when they have been interrupted by an action in the passé composé). Timothy regardait la télévision quand le téléphone a sonné. Timothy was watching tv (imperfect – ongoing action) when the phone rang (pc – completed action which interrupts). Je faisais mes devoirs quand marie est arrivée. I was doing my homework (imperfect ongoing action) when Marie arrived (pc – completed action which interrupts ).

How do you think this image of a river with lots of bridges could illustrate the imperfect?

How do we form it? 1)Use the nous part of the present tense. 2) Take of the –ons ending (this makes the imperfect stem). 3) Add the following endings to it: Je - ais Tu –ais Il – ait Elle – ait Nous – ions Vous – iez Ils – ient Elles – aient

Examples: Faire: 1) Present tense nous form: Faisons 2) Take off –ons →Imperfect stem = fais…. 3) Add the endings. Je faisais Tu faisais Il faisait Elle faisait Nous faisions Vous faisiez Ils faisaient Elles faisaient

Regarder: 1) Present tense nous form: regardons 2) Take off –ons →Imperfect stem = regard…. 3) Add the endings. Je regardais Tu regardais Il regardait Elle regardait Nous regardions Vous regardiez Ils regardaient Elles regardaient.

Try putting these verbs in the imperfect. AllerMangerFinir

The only irregular verb in the imperfect is ETRE. It still keeps the same endings as all the other verbs except it has a different stem. The stem is ét _____ So the forms of être are as follows: J’étais Tu étais Il était Elle était Nous étions Vous étiez Ils étaient Elles étaient

What do these sentences mean? 1)La fille était petite et elle avait les cheveux longs et blonds. 2)J’allais à la plage tous les jour quand j’étais jeune. 3)J’écoutais de la musique quand mon frère est arrivé. 4)Il portait un t-shirt bleu et un pantalon noir. 5)Quand j’avais 6 ans je me couchais à 7 heures. 6)Je marchais dans la forêt quand j’ai vu un serpent.
