-er Tu + elle/il/on + nous + vous + Je + 1 = je 2= tu 3= il/elle/on 4= nous 5= vous 6= ils/elles Ils / elles +

Basically this term means changing the infinitive of a verb (a doing word) into a tense. But what is an infinitive? What does “ conjugating a verb” mean?

What is an INFINITIVE ? An infinitive is the form of the verb that you will find in a French dictionary. It is the form of the verb before it has a subject or a time and all tenses start from it. 3 different infinitives in French : jouER - to play finIR- to finish vendRE - to sell

The present tense is used to talk about what is happening now or, in general terms, what happens every day. Example: Je regarde la télé.I watch/I am watching TV. J’ai un frère.I have one brother. Je suis écossais.I am Scottish. The first example can be translated not just as “I watch TV”, but also as “I’m watching TV”. In English we have two different forms of the present tense but French is less complicated - there is just one! The Present Tense

You have already learnt some French verbs in the present tense. Can you remember which ones? The verbs which you have learnt so far (like avoir and être) are irregular. This means that they don’t follow a set pattern and their endings have to be learnt very carefully. Luckily, not all verbs are like this. Some verbs, called regular verbs, follow a set pattern. This means that if you learn the endings for one verb, you will be able to use the same endings on all the other verbs that belong to the same group. However the difference with English is that there are 3 different infinitives (-er, -ir, -re) so 3 different ways of putting a verb in the present tense.

Les Verbes en -ER

Can you work out a rule for the present of the verb jouER (to play)? Je Tu Il / Elle Nous Vous Ils / Elles joue joues joue jouons jouez jouent I play, I am playing You play, you are playing He / she plays, he / she is playing We play, we are playing You play, you are playing They play, they are playing The biggest group of regular verbs are those whose infinitive ends in – er. We call these regular –er verbs!

1.Subjects are words like “I, you, he, …..”. Try to remember the French for : I = you = he = she = it = we = you = they = je / j’ (in front of a verb beginning with a vowel or silent h) tu (when talking to one person / to someone who is younger than you or that you know well) il elle il/elle (depending on the gender of the noun) nous on (is very common in spoken French and means “we-as-a-group”) vous (when talking to more than one person / when talking to a person whom you don’t kow well or who is older than you) ils (is used when there is at least one male in the group) elles (is only used if ALL the people or things being referred to are female)

2. Take off the infinitive ”-ER” je/j’ tu il elle nous vous ils elles parl- ER

3. Add the endings of the present tense for “ER” verbs -e -es -e je/j’ tu il elle nous vous ils elles -ons -ez -ent parl- parl- parl- parl- parl- parl- parl- parl-

Here is the whole of the verb regarder. It means ‘to watch’ in English, and it is an example of a regular – ER verb. Je Tu Il / Elle Nous Vous Ils / Elles regarde regardes regarde regardons regardez regardent I watch, I am watching You watch, you are watching He / she watches, he / she is watching We watch, we are watching You watch, you are watching They watch, they are watching Regular –er verbs

Regular –ER verbs

Now that you know how to do it, choose a verb from the list below and write it out in full with the English. Remember to put j’ instead of je if the verb starts with a vowel or a silent “h”. adorer – to adore / love aimer – to like / love détester – to hate écouter – to listen habiter – to live travailler – to work Je Tu Il / Elle Nous Vous Ils / Elles Regular –ER verbs

Sometimes verbs are almost regular! Can you see what’s slightly irregular about the verb manger (to eat)? Je Tu Il / Elle Nous Vous Ils / Elles mange manges mange mangeons mangez mangent I eat, I am eating You eat, you are eating He / she eats, he / she is eating We eat, we are eating You eat, you are eating They eat, they are eating The extra e is needed to make the verb sound right!
