On a besoin de is used to state what you have need for to do an activity: Nous avons besoin d’une rondelle. Porter is a verb used to state what you wear: Tu portes une casque. Pour + infinitif is used to explain the goal of an action Pour jouer au hockey tu as besoin d’une rondelle.

To say that you have need for something use the expression… On a besoin de… J’ai besoin des gants. (I have need for gloves.) Il a besoin d’une casque (He has need for a helmet.) Nous avons besoin d’un filet. (We have need for a net.)

To say that you are wearing something use the verb… Porter Je porte des protège-coudes. (I wear elbow pads.) Nous portons des maillots de bain. (We wear bathing suits.) Ils portent des chaussures de sport. (They wear sneakers.)

To say that it is necessary to do something use the expression… il faut + infinitif Il faut avoir de bons muscles. (It is necessary to have good muscles) Il faut viser le panier. (It is necessary to see the net) Il faut travailler en équipe. (It is necessary to work as a team)

Put it all together: Pour jouer au hockey, il faut patiner. Il faut avoir de bons muscles pour faire du plongeon. Il porte des gants quand il fais du ski. Vous avez besoin d’un maillot de bain pour faire de la natation.
