Holidays around the World!

Noël et Hanouka aux Etats- Unis You tell me! What do Americans do to celebrate Christmas? What about Hanoukka? (French spelling!)

Noël en Espagne En Espagne – Spain – Christmas is still mainly a religious holiday. It is a time for worship and for family. There is not such a commercial tradition surrounding Christmas. On January 6, Spanish children receive presents from the Three Wise Men – not Santa Claus or Père Noël.

Noël en Grande Bretagne Father Christmas brings presents for children who hang their stockings on their beds. There is a tradition of Christmas Pantomime, a special theatre production for children and young people that is usually based around a fairy tale.

Fête d’Indépendence en France! “Bastille Day,” as we call it, begins with a military parade on the Champs-Elysées, a big avenue in Paris. At night, they set off fireworks to celebrate the storming of the Bastille.

Fête d’Indépendence en Mexique On September 16, 1810, a man names Dolores called his townspeople to arms to rise up against the British Crown. Now, people celebrate on September 16. On the night before, the President of Mexico comes out onto his balcony and leads a rousing shout of “Viva Mexico!”

Fête de St. Patrice en Irlande St Patrick’s day is celebrated in Ireland with parades and parties. People are supposed to “wear the green” – wear a shamrock on their clothes – to remind everyone that St Patrick explained the Holy Trinity to pagans using the three leaves of the shamrock.
