Look at the following 3 sentences. Ali played football yesterday. They have visited Paris 3 times. We did talk on the phone. What do they have in common? Is this done in the same way in each sentence? All 3 of these English tenses can be translated by just 1 tense in French. It is called…

Each of the following sentences contains an example of the passé composé tense. Ali a joué au foot hier. Ils ont visité Paris 3 fois. Nous avons parlé au téléphone. What is the first thing you notice about this tense? Look at the first of the highlighted words in each sentence. Where have you seen this before?

JaiNous avons Tu asVous avez Il aIls ont Elle aElles ont The Present tense of Avoir

Now take a look at the second of the highlighted words in each sentence. This is known as the past participle. To form the past participle, take the infinitive (the form of the verb you find in the dictionary) and remove the –er and change it to –é. Ali a joué au foot hier. Ils ont visité Paris 3 fois. Nous avons parlé au téléphone.

Here are some examples of changing the infinitive into the past participle travaillertravaillé regarderregardé rater raté chercher cherché passerpassé visitervisité

Il a regardé Nousavons passé Jai visité So remember… The passé composé is made up of 2 parts. The first is part of the present tense of avoir. The second is the past participle of the verb you want to put into the past.

Some French verbs have irregular past participles They dont follow a regular pattern. You will have to memorize them when you learn the verb. Here are the past participles of some irregular verbs that youve already seen. fairefaitJai fait mes devoirs. prendreprisIls ont pris un taxi. voirvuIl a vu sa grand-mère. lirelu Elle a lu un roman français.

Underline the past participle and circle the helping verb. Quest-ce qu tu as fait ce week-end? Nous avons vu un film. Jai mangé de la pizza. Claire a étudié à la bibliothèque. Ils ont pris un taxi. Vous avez gagné le mctch de hockey? Les élèves ont visité le musée.

Test yourself with the following sentences: J ____ ________. (travailler) Tu ____ _______. (parler) Il _____ _______. (faire) Nous ______ _______. (prendre) Vous ______ _______. (voir) Ils _______ _______. (lire)

Negation To make a verb in the passé composé negative, put ne (n)… pas around the helping verb. Je nai pas étudié. Il nai pas parlé au téléphoné. Nous navons pas mangé descargots. online act10-12 tp pp act 1-7

Note de grammaire When you use the passé composé with adverbs such as trop, beaucoup, pas encore (not yet), bien (well), mal (badly), and déjà (already), place the adverb before the past participle of the verb. Jai déjà mangé. Nadine na pas encore vu ce film. tp p 74 act 8 online act 13
