I can… I can explain and compare how New Year’s is celebrated in France and the US. I can explain what the tradition ‘galette des rois’ is in France. I can also explain what Epiphany is and know where it is celebrated in the world, as well as note the differences. I can listen, read and comprehend French reports and videos on those topics.

Joyeux Nouvel An! In France, New Year's Eve (31 December) is called la Saint-Sylvestre (*Saint Sylvester was Pope from 314 to 335 A.D., during the time of Constantine the Great) and is usually celebrated with a feast, called le Réveillon de Saint-Sylvestre. The feast tends to include special items like champagne and foie gras, and the accompanying party can range from an intimate dinner with friends to une soirée dansante (ball). At midnight, everyone kisses under the mistletoe and offers their best wishes for the new year. Interestingly, kissing under the mistletoe is a New Year's custom in France, rather than a Christmas custom as in other countries. Have volunteers read aloud. Should write down circled words in notes on back of galette des rois.

There is no particular link between Saint Sylvester and the new year; it just so happens that 31 December is his feast day. La Saint-Sylvestre is short for la fête de Saint-Sylvestre.

On New Year's Day, le Jour de l'An, friends and family share their New Year's resolutions and may also exchange cards and gifts. The end of the holiday season is Epiphany, on 6 January, which in France includes a traditional cake called la galette des rois.

Like most of the holidays in France, this is a Catholic festival or day of feast; this particular one in honor of God’s son coming to us in human form as Jesus. Other religions celebrate the holiday on the first Sunday after the New Year. In France, as ordained by the Vatican, Epiphany falls on January 6 of each year. Almost all French people celebrate the holiday with a Galette, an almond-paste filled pie-cake, whether or not they are practicing Catholics. Even if you are not particularly religious yourself, the tradition and the history surrounding this holiday in France are interesting and quite adorable.
