Les pronoms COI C’était l’idée du chat. Je te le jure. Indirect Object Pronouns C’était l’idée du chat. Je te le jure.

To learn to replace a person with an indirect object pronoun Objective: To learn to replace a person with an indirect object pronoun Je parle à ma mère. Je lui parle. Je téléphone à mes ami(e)s. Je leur téléphone. Je parle à mon père. Je lui parle.

We use the indirect object pronouns, lui and leur with verbs that require the preposition à before the person. Some verbs like that are:   écrire à parler à téléphoner à envoyer à offrir à chanter à prendre à permettre à montrer à dire à raconter à expliquer à plaire à jurer à donner à promettre à lire à demander à acheter à obéir à FR4 & AP Ajouter : faire confiance à, obéir à, etc.

etc. There are also some verbal expressions: faire confiance à Most of these verbs have two objects: a thing and a person, thing person In a French sentence, the ‘person’ always comes after the ‘thing.’ faire confiance à faire de la peine à faire du mal à faire (quelque chose) à etc. FR4 & AP Ajouter : faire confiance à, obéir à, e.g. “J’écris un mail à mon ami.”

Choosing whether to use lui or leur You need to look at: The verb. Is it followed by the word à? Be careful because “à” is not always visible. The noun it is replacing. Is it a person or several persons? Je parle aux élèves.  Je leur parle. Tu écris à Stéphanie.  Tu lui écris.

Lui and leur are not the only indirect object pronouns Lui and leur are not the only indirect object pronouns. The others are: me, m’ You give me an apple.  Tu me donnes une pomme. te, t’ I call you tonight.  Je te téléphone ce soir. nous He explains the lesson to us.  Il nous explique la leçon. vous I promise you an ice cream.  Je vous promets une glace.

All rules you learned about direct object pronouns apply also to indirect object pronouns. With one verb: (Paul) I give him a book. Je lui donne un livre. In a negative sentence: (the neigbors) You don’t send them an invitation.  Tu ne leur envoies pas d’invitation. With two verbs: (Pauline) I want to call her  Je veux lui téléphoner. In imperative sentences: (the teachers) Ask them questions.  Pose-leur des questions ! (your friend) Don’t tell him/her lies.  Ne lui dis pas de mensonges !

you (informal/1 person) lui him, her nous us vous Pronoms COI Indirect Object Pronouns me , m’ me te , t’ you (informal/1 person) lui him, her nous us vous you (formal and/or plural) leur them NOTES 1 – All indirect object pronouns can only replace people. 2 – Except for lui and leur, all other pronouns serve both as direct and indirect object pronouns. 3 – In imperative affirmative sentences, me becomes moi. e.g. “Réponds-moi !”
