The Imperative/Commands The command form of a verb is used to express: -orders -invitations -requests -rules -advice

Formation When giving a command in French you only use the TU, NOUS, and VOUS form of the verb. WHY? You have to tell someone what/what not to do.

VOUS COMMANDS Talking to more than one person Talking to a group of people OR Talking to ONE person formally - an adult - a stranger

TU COMMANDS -Talking to one person -Talking to someone informally -friend -family member -classmate

NOUS COMMANDS = Lets Talking to a group of people, including yourself. Lets – there is no word for lets in French, it is implied by the NOUS command.

VOUS COMMAND FORMATION 1. Go to the vous form of the verb. Vous écoutez 2. Drop the vous. Ecoutez 3. Add an exclamation point. Ecoutez!

TU IR/RE FORMATION 1.Go to the tu form of the verb. Tu finis 2.Drop the tu. Finis 3. Add an exclamation point. Finis!

TU ER FORMATION 1.Go to the tu form of the verb Tu parles 2.Drop the tu Parles 3. Drop the s (EXTRA STEP) Parle 4. Add an exclamation point Parle!

NOUS COMMAND FORMATION NOUS COMMANDS = Lets 1. Go to the nous form of the verb Nous parlons 2. Drop the nous Parlons 3. Add an exclamation point Parlons! = Lets talk!

ADD Détruire – to destroy Détruis, détruisons, détruisez Réduire – to reduce Réduis, réduisons, réduisez

Negative Statements Ne (pas) goes around the verb. Ne parle pas à Pierre! Ne parle jamais à Pierre!

REFLEXIVE VERBS 1. Conjugate verb in appropriate form vous vous levez 2. Drop the subject vous levez 3. Switch order, add hyphen, exclamation point levez-vous! 4. Te changes to toi leve-toi! NO S = ER VERB

NEGATIVE REFLEXIVES 1. Conjugate verb in appropriate form vous vous levez 2. Drop the subject vous levez 3. Ne (pas) goes around everything, ne vous levez pas! Dont switch the order TE does not switch to « toi » Ne te leve pas!
