“Depuis”

“Depuis” “Depuis” is the word used in French when you want to say you have been doing something for a certain length of time. You use “depuis” when you are still doing the activity.

“Depuis” So… In “I have been playing football for 2 years” we would use “depuis” to translate “for”. In “I played football for 2 years” we wouldn’t use “depuis” because I am not still playing football.

“Depuis” In French, we have to use the present tense rather than the past tense in sentences with “depuis”.

“Depuis” So… “I have been playing football for 2 years” is past tense in English. “Je joue au football depuis 2 ans” is present tense in French.

“Depuis” 1 an Je joue au football depuis un an.

“Depuis” 5 ans Je joue du piano depuis 5 ans.

“Depuis” 5 mois Je joue au rugby depuis 5 mois.

“Depuis” 2 mois Je fais de la natation depuis 2 mois.

“Depuis” 2 semaines J’habite à Paris depuis 2 semaines.
