Issues for the epigraphist: specialist knowledge in order to publish previously unpublished texts (and republish texts). Issues for the user of epigraphic sources: find (bibliography, geography, typology), understand (ability to ‘read’ an epigraphic edition), put to use. Two basic heuristic procedures: trace a text departing from a reference; establish the presence (or lack) of epigraphic evidence departing from a particular question 1. Summary
