How to form the negative in French Les négatifs How to form the negative in French

Put ne and pas around the verb Je ne mange pas de légumes. Ne and pas are around the conjugated form of the verb manger. Ils n’aiment pas les chiens. Ne and pas are around the verb aimer – notice that ne became n’ before the vowell ‘a’ Le facteur ne distribue pas le courrier le dimanche. Ne and pas are around the verb distribuer

There are other negATIVES BESIDES JUST ‘PAS’ Ne…jamais means never Je ne mange jamais la viande. Ne…rien means nothing Je ne mange rien. Ne…aucun(e) means not a single one Je n’ai aucun frère. Je n’ai aucune soeur. Ne…personne means no one Je ne connais personne avec une mini-cooper. Ne…ni…ni means neither/nor Je n’ai ni soeur ni frère.

Notice: The rien jamais aucun aucune personne ni…ni all replace the PAS in the sentence. There is NO PAS when you use one of these other negatives.

Rien and personne can start a sentence, too. Personne n’est en retard! No one is late. Rien n’est dans le sac. Nothing is in the bag. Notice that there is nothing following the verb. There is still no PAS.
