Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns in French

Mary is the direct object What is a direct object? A word or group of words that receives the direct action of the verb. So in the sentence: John likes Mary Mary is the direct object John is the subject likes is the verb

What is an indirect object? Tells for whom or to whom something is done So in the sentence: He gave me an apple. me is the indirect object He is the subject an apple is the direct object gave is the verb

What is a pronoun? A pronoun is a replacement word. It takes the place of a noun. I see Jane  I see her We eat cake  We eat it I wrote to Julie  I wrote to her

Chart of Pronouns When using more than one pronoun in a sentence they will ALWAYS go in this order

What’s the difference? Il me parle Indirect means ‘when there IS someone or something in the way’, usually indicated by the word or sense of TO (in French À) So - “he talks to me” is “il me parle” Il me parle

What’s the difference? Il me voit Direct literally means ‘when there’s no-one or nothing in the way’ So - he sees me is il me voit

You can best tell the difference... With words for him, her, them… Je parle à mes amis = je leur parle Je donne le livre à Jean= je lui donne le livre in many other cases, the choice of pronoun will look the same

In the passé composé, the DIRECT OBJECT must AGREE with the PAST PARTICIPLE!

Pronouns and negatives Direct and indirect object pronouns go before the verb when the phrase is negative and the ne…pas or other negative term wraps round - je ne l’aime pas il ne la voit pas nous ne les achetons plus ils ne le livrent jamais

Pronouns with two verbs You can see when to use this format in the following examples: vous voulez le voir? Tu dois lui téléphoner elle ne peut pas vous parler il a voulu me rencontrer nous avons décidé de lui parler

So, to recap on placement Direct and indirect object pronouns… go BEFORE the verb in most cases go BEFORE the infinitive when you have two verbs go BEFORE the auxiliary verb (avoir/être) in the passé composé

A word that replaces a noun So what is a pronoun? A word that replaces a noun

Now Commands There are two types of commands, positive (Donnez!) and negative (Ne donnez pas!) In negative commands, the pronouns all look the same: Ne le donnez pas! or Ne lui parlez pas! or Ne me téléphonez pas! or Ne te lave pas!

Positive Commands However, in positive commands two things change. The order Me and te become MOI and TOI

Practice Make the negative commands positive: Non, ne me téléphone pas! Non, ne m’attends pas! Non, ne les invitez pas! Téléphone-moi! Attends-moi! Invitez-les!

Practice Make the positive commands negative: Oui, prête-lui de l’argent ! Oui, achète-toi un CD! Oui, donnez-moi ton adresse ! Ne lui prête pas de l’argent! Ne t’achète pas un CD! Ne me donnez pas ton adresse!

Practice Make the positive commands negative: Oui, prête-lui de l’argent ! Oui, achète-toi un CD! Oui, donnez-moi ton adresse ! Ne lui prête pas de l’argent! Ne t’achète pas un CD! Ne me donnez pas ton adresse!
