Point de départ You have already learned expressions in French containing prepositions like à, de, and en. Prepositions of location describe the location of something or someone in relation to something or someone else.

Use the preposition à before the name of any city to express in or to Use the preposition à before the name of any city to express in or to. The preposition that accompanies the name of a country varies, but you can use en in many cases. In Leçon 7A, you will learn more names of countries and their corresponding prepositions.

Use the contractions du and des in prepositional expressions when they are appropriate.

You can further modify prepositions of location by using intensifiers such as tout (very, really) and juste (just, right).

You may use prepositions without the word de when they are not followed by a noun.

The preposition chez has no exact English equivalent The preposition chez has no exact English equivalent. It expresses the idea of at or to someone’s house or place.

Note the use of chez in the following sentences: Paul est chez Céline. Je dîne chez un copain. Nathalie est chez Juliette. Tu visites chez ta cousine. The French equivalent of to to at someone’s house/home is the construction: chez + person chez Béatrice chez ma cousine

Use disjunctive pronouns after prepositions instead of subject pronouns:

Stress/disjunctive pronouns are used… To reinforce a subject pronoun. Moi, je parle français. Vous, vous parlez anglais. After c’est and ce n’est pas. C’est Paul là-bas? Non, ce n’est pas lui. In short sentences were there is no verb. Qui parle français ici? MOI!!! Before and after et and ou Lui et moi, nous sommes copains. After prepositions such as de, avec, pour, chez Voici Marc et Paul. Je parle souvent d’eux. Voici Isabelle. Je vais au cinéma avec elle. Voici M. Mercier. Nous travaillons pour lui. ►Note the meaning of chez + stress pronoun Je vais chez moi. Paul étudie chez lui. Tu viens chez nous? Je suis chez Alice. Je dîne chez elle.

Disjunctive pronouns: You can also use these after the prepositions you have been learning. Nous sommes chez eux. We are at their house. Le livre est à côté de moi. The book is next to me. Elle habite à côté de lui. She lives next door to him. Il travaille en face d’eux. He works across from them. Je visite chez toi. I visit your house. Nous arrivons chez vous. We are arriving at your house.
