Subject pronouns 3 But you will sometimes want to talk about other people as well! Bernadette Je m’appelle Bernadette. J’ai 14 ans. J’ai un frère. Il s’appelle Pierre. Il a 12 ans. Ma mère s’appelle Béatrice. Elle a 38 ans. Mon père s’appelle Jean. Il a 40 ans. In the passage above, Bernadette starts off talking about herself, but then talks about the other members of her family. Can you see which word means ‘he’ and which word means ‘she’?

I expect you worked out that ‘il’ means ‘he’ and ‘elle’ means ‘she’. What has happened to the verbs? (They are underlined above.) They have changed! ‘J’ai’ has become ‘Il / Elle a’ and ‘m’appelle’ has become ‘s’appelle’.
