Introduction  Since its invention, IC Engines have been widely used, especially in Automobile and Industrial applications. There have been a lot of research for enhancement of IC Engines. Most specifically in increasing efficiency and power output.  In this project we are going to analyse the problems involving the fluid-fluid, fluid-solid, fluid-gases, and heat interaction and their effect on power output of an IC Engine by using CFD and Ansys:  What is CFD?  Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): It is an engineering tool used to simulate the action of thermo- fluids in a system. It is used in development of work to analyse, optimize and verify the performance of designs before costly prototype and physical tests. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to analyse and solve problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the free-stream flow of the fluid, and the interaction of the fluid (liquids and gases) with surfaces defined by boundary conditions.  ANSYS: It is an engineering simulation software which is used for analysis and optimization. It develops CAE/Multiphysics engineering simulation for product design, testing and operation and offers detailed results including graphs and reports. Ansys is a very powerful tool for Computational Fluid Dynamics and also contains various workbenches for Static as well as Dynamic study and analysis of systems. 2

Why use CFD? Analysis and Design 1. Simulation-based design instead of “build & test”  More cost effective and more rapid than EFD  CFD provides high-fidelity database for diagnosing flow field 2. Simulation of physical fluid phenomena that are difficult for experiments  Full scale simulations (e.g., ships and airplanes)  Environmental effects (wind, weather, etc.)  Hazards (e.g., explosions, radiation, pollution)  Physics (e.g., planetary boundary layer, stellar evolution) Knowledge and exploration of flow physics 3

Objective: The objective of this project is Design, Analysis and optimization of a single cylinder IC Engine and then to further provide few modifications to the previous design and then analyze and compare the new values of output with the previous values. Methodology to be Adopted: Ansys workbench will be used to analyse and optimize the fluid flow characteristics and thus help in improving its power output. Following steps will be used for simulation of an IC Engine Model in Ansys: 1) Geometry: Provide the Ansys Software with the 3D or 2D geometry of the preferred system. 2) Physics: Flow conditions and fluid properties, Selection of models, Initial and Boundary Conditions 3) Mesh: The mesh is generated for FEA modelling. 4) Numerical Solution: The software provides the solution for the given boundary conditions. 5) Report: These solutions are analysed and validated for their merits and demerits. 7

Advantages of virtual experiments with CFD: 1) Specific physical boundary conditions or effects can be considered in isolation 2) Simulations provide at any point (of the pattern) measured data, experiments in contrast only a few selected points 3) Many flow parameters are gathered, which are not accessible in experiments in the beginning of the planning process, a variety of prototypes are simulated in order to 4) Quickly gather information for further planning 5) Simulations are able to contribute to a greater understanding of the problem than experiments the costs are usually much lower compared to experiments Disadvantages of virtual experiments with CFD: 1) Errors may occur due to simple flow models or simplified boundary conditions 2) Possible uncertainties caused by too little computing values per cell and hence therefore resulting interpolation errors 3) Computation time may extend for large models 4) The costs may be much higher due to wrong consulting compared to experiments. 9
